I shall have to go and research this tradition now that I am aware of it. It is a good thing to reflect on your roots and especially to draw strength from them. I too am in a place where I am trying to rediscover who I am by remembering who I have been. As my sweet sister Jayne said, the difference is that you really aren't "alone" in the sense that those before you were. There's a great big world full of people out there who have had, and are in the midst of, challenges that are similar to our own. I am finding that so many of them are willing to reach out to touch others. What a blessing!bandjzmomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17884535395274741378noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9025568998589461867.post-21954961333523050972009-11-26T18:50:19.409-08:002009-11-26T18:50:19.409-08:00Thank you for the memories. I have her photo next to my bed (thanks to your Mom). You and I are blessed to have such strong women to emulate and I am blessed to share these wonderful memories through your beautiful writing. And he was vigorous and active right up 'til the end, so maybe there's something to the idea of sassafras as a tonic. Of course, he also drank a cup of apple cider vinegar every day, so who knows? I always liked the taste myself (of sassafras, not vinegar!) but haven't drunk it for years.

You are so fortunate to have had such strong women in your past. I'm always amazed when I remember my grandma and my own mother. They both went through such hardship, but endured by the grace of God and their own courage and strength. I admire them more than I can say.Bethhttp://blueridgebluecollargirl.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9025568998589461867.post-44310109257351365972009-11-25T06:03:08.477-08:002009-11-25T06:03:08.477-08:00Both of my grandmothers lived at least 25 years lo...Both of my grandmothers lived at least 25 years longer than their husbands, so you're not alone in witnessing that length of widowhood. I think they struggled, too, to discover who they were when the primary relationship of their lives was no longer there to reflect those questions back to them. It takes time, discovery, and reflection, and as one of my favorite theologians writes, one day you'll live into the answers (Rilke). In the meantime, blessings on your journey day by day. There is a whole world at your fingertips and truly the opportunities that exist for us to expand our minds and horizons are limitless now. How wonderful that you have memories of such strong women in your life Donna. Yes, I do believe that sassafras has given you even extra strength! :c) Have a beautiful day!Jaynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14057094040409159429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9025568998589461867.post-81073384868286064082009-11-24T21:56:52.986-08:002009-11-24T21:56:52.986-08:00yeah baby!
